Penchant for Crazy Women

Ty and Gustav discuss crazy women, small town radio, international listeners.  Heavy wandered off again so it’s just Gus, Ty and a bottle of brown drink as they stroll down  small town memory lane once again.

To get the ball rolling, they debate whether or not Ty’s glass of brown drink is either a tumbler or a high ball glass or some such.  Clearly neither of them knows what they are talking about, so if you would like to email us and explain how to tell glasses apart, we would welcome the feedback.

Once again Ty and Gus talk about the late 70’s/early 80’s comedy phenomenon of SCTV.  Here is the Michael McDonald impersonation by Rick Moranis that Gus mentions ( but Gus is definitely wrong about the type of car he’s driving):

Gus confesses that he knew Ty was the class comedian early on and Ty discusses his comedic influences and his own solo work at the time.

They discuss their experiences listening to and love of small town radio from days gone past.

Then things turn sort of serious as they discuss crazy women.  Particularly, they discuss a crazy girlfriend of Ty’s from high school.  The stories would be a public service episode to share with any teenage boy so that they can learn from Ty’s misspent youth.  They also explain the concept of the small town “Drag”

Not Ty’s Ex-Girlfriend (as far as we know…)

Then Gus shares an email from one of their Australian listeners and that our international listener outreach is making progress.  Hopefully we will hear from more and more international voices.  And eventually Gus will get those t-shirts sent out.

Tawny Kitaen Was On the Cover

Buckle up for a stream of conscience episode where the guys discuss water parks, free will, genetics and what album cover Tawny Kitaen was on.

If you hadn’t heard, America’s Favorite, Heavy Longmire is back on board and full of things to say.  We appreciate you sticking through two months of the Ty and Gus show.  To get things going, Gustav talks a bit about his kids being obsessed with zombies currently.  No doubt their father’s paranoia about the collapse of civilization has seeped into their little minds.  That leads to some gun talk, repo men stereotypes, the American Anarachist documentary, time traveling Gustav and more nutkicking about Tesla.

Heavy, unused to being in civilization, totally changes the conversation to an article Valley Butcher sent the boys about the wheels off history of Texas politics.

Ty then discusses his hatred of water parks after a recent outing with his family.  Gustav describes what it’s like to head to any public pool in the 903 area code.

Thinking back to their youth, the boys discuss Tawny Kitaen and her hotness in Whitesnake videos and album covers.  That leads to discussion about Kelly LeBrock and Weird Science.

She damn sure was on the album cover!

Going in a completely different direction, Ty then takes the dialogue into the world of free will, neuroscience and genetics.  Once again the evil spectre of eugenics raises it’s ugly head.  A discussion of the benefits of programs like Early Childhood Intervention ensues.

Heavy gets into physics talk and Gus describes his organic chemistry experiences in college.

So send us your emails about free will, your favorite eighties album cover girl or water park stories to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com

The Tale of the Melted Fork

While Heavy Longmire is still out trapping muskrat, Ty and Gus got together to talk old game shows, share a story about a melted fork, kick around some hardware ideas and do a little dentist talk.

Ty starts things off with a story about the former child actor, his jeep, a college cop, and some shade tree mechanics.  The shade tree mechanics lead Gus back to another co-worker from the previous episode’s stories about their first job.

Gus wonders about the species of grass which may contain the same chemical that is in vanilla and shows that he knows way too much about Hierochloe oderata.  The vanilla talk leads the boys down a path back to a vague and ultimately incorrect memory about an episode of Family Ties where someone drinks vanilla extract for the alcohol.  Gus and Ty are dead wrong on which character it was.  Be sure to listen to the outro to see if you can identify the very famous voice who actually did drink the vanilla extract.

Recently Gus went to get his teeth cleaned and had a really bad time while on nitrous oxide.  Ty then drops a bomb shell on Gus which leaves Gus worried about how long Ty has left on this earth.

Oops……

Then Gus tells Ty about a trip to his parents where he saw his brother and how one thing led to another and then there was a smoker, a melted fork and some cussing.  That led to his brother doing some bourbon fueled welding to “fix” the melted fork.

melted fork rebuilt

We have the technology to rebuild him…

Ty shares the story of his grandmother on famous game show.  Once again they then dive into game show talk and fondly remember the Price is Right and the Gong Show.  Then they geek out over Tom Snyder and Joe Franklin for a while.

So send us your emails about  game shows, bad trips and crap you’ve melted to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com

Be sure to listen to listen to Gustav’s guest appearance on Megan’s Movie Podcast on the Blowout Podcast Network where he and Megan talk about Tombstone.

Three Wide in a S-10

This week the guys talk about recent acts they’ve seen, carnivals, hitchhiking, a harrowing tale of being three wide in a S-10, Cheers and Michael Keaton.

Gustav starts off the episode with a field report about the Steve Martin and Martin Short show he recently saw, as well as comparing and contrasting it to the John Cleese and Eric Idle show from earlier in the year.  Heavy talks about his anniversary date to go see the Drive-by-Truckers at the Granada with a stop to see Chef Rob before the show.

The boy’s lament missing the Old 97’s Country Fair this year with a hint of remorse about last year’s County Fair and the lost episode.  Ty tells about his most recent use of Craig’s List to unload tickets to the Fortress Festival.

Fair talk leads to carnival talk as the guys remember winning roach clips and age inappropriate mirrors from the carnies.  Gus tells a freak show story and recalls being stuck when a ride broke. The ever present theme of the freedom and inherent danger of a kids life in the eighties presents itself once again.

Don’t Find Yourself Three Wide in a S-10

Heavy tells the story of a little traveling Mexican Circus he took his family too after church one day.  The traveling life opens the question of taking an RV across the country.  RV travel naturally leads to talk of train hopping and former railroad man Pappy Longmire.  Ty has a great story of how his friends in college hopped a train and ended up in a very uncomfortable situation and found themselves three wide in a S-10 pickup.  That story leads to more hitchhiking talk including a tale of Point Break Dave from Tell Me Where to Turn Podcast fame.

Ty and Gus engage in Michael Keaton talk with a focus on Night Shift, Mr. Mom and Birdman.  Heavy can’t help himself and makes a Gung-Ho joke in hopes of derailing the conversation.  While remembering the eighties, the guys talk MASH and Cheers.

Gus is dying to talk about Beyond the Valley of the Dolls but has to explain to Heavy who Russ Meyer was so that goes nowhere.  Ty has an idea for a premium content episode about Three’s Company.

So send us your emails of carnies, hitchhiking and your own three wide tales to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com

Gary Gnu and Family Heirlooms

After so many weeks of jocularity, your three favorite educated hillbillies wander into semi-serious topics as they discuss business owners rights, Gary Gnu, and family heirlooms with a a few detours along the way.

We start this week’s voyage off with Heavy trying to sing once more.  If you like that sort of thing, then you are in luck. If you don’t like it, wait it out because it thankfully only lasts a short while. Inspired by his own singing, he shares with us a tale of him trying to bond with one of his daughters over Michael Jackson music.  That leads to some talk about seventies and eighties kids shows like the Lost Saucer and Wonderbug, which somehow leads to Gus claiming one of the actors in Wonderbug would go on to star as a non-porn role in the infamous New Wave Hookers 2.  (check out his credits on IMDB!)  Then Heavy tells how Mrs. Longmire tried to pronunciation shame him on the pronunciation of “GNU” but he defended the attack by citing the Gary Gnu show from The Great Space Coaster!  Heavy also offers up some New Wave fun facts (the music, not the porno movie) and Gus and Heavy have stories of stupid stuff their kids have said lately.

Gary Gnu Holding Heavy’s Family Heirloom

Gus then stears the ship into a serious discussion about separating the art from the artist and how society changes their views on a persons creations if that person may fall out of favor due to actions or new facts emerging about their character.  Somehow that leads to a discussion about states rights, the rights of a business owner to refuse service and the legal and moral implications of private citizens excluding customers based on any number of criteria.  Obviously, we needed J.J.’s legal opinion, so hopefully he will correct us via email.

Speaking of email, Tellito sends in a thought provoking email about family heirlooms which leads the guys down memory lane and man is it dusty and dry.

Columbia House Record Club

Believe it or not, for the first time in over a month, the full crew is back together to bring you fashion talk, fun facts about syphilis and to learn how Heavy used to game the Columbia House Record Club.

But to start things off there is a lot of confusion about the Neville Brothers, the members of the Jackson Five and the unexplained stardom of a young Jimmy Osmond in Japan.  As things settle down, Gustav recounts his disdain for a poor pan flute player in the Portland Airport.  Then Heavy talks about the Columbia House Record Club and how he may or may not have led to their eventual demise.

Why is that Guy in the Background So Happy?

The limits of technology are then pushed as we have Heavy listen live for the first time to a super cool hip musical act. But his response is far less than what we had hoped.  Then Gustav can’t remember a band from the late eighties and Ty and Heavy are absolutely no help.

For inexplicable reasons, the guys return to sock talk which leads to Heavy accusing them of being like a bunch of old women.  Yet he is fine jumping in on fashion talk from our youth as we deal with chains for men, Member’s Only Jackets and OP corduroy shorts.

Long time listener and frequent emailer Cody sends in a harrowing tale of a gargling mix-up. That somehow turns to old time diagnosis talk, the near death of Tell Me Where to Turn‘s Point Break Dave and fun facts about Syphilis.

Fractional Recollections and New Coke

The guys are back in Episode 32 to do a little remembering about New Coke, candy from the seventies and give a little love advice.  While we fully acknowledge that nostalgia for the 90’s is the territory of the Partial Recall Podcast, we felt that we were safe to slide back into the seventies and eighties for a bit of “membering”.

A previous episode featured the story of a faulty Coke machine in the jr. high field house which if someone was willing to get shocked, would continue to feed out free Coke’s.  Ty and Heavy seemed to remember that it was a “New Coke” machine so that prompted us to discuss the disastrous change from the traditional Coke recipe to the New Coke  and the subsequent backlash that led to Coca-Cola Classic, with New Coke eventually fading out of existence.

They Even Got Cosby to Shill for New Coke

Of course we discuss why Coca-Cola management felt the need to monkey with a good thing.  A major factor was the Pepsi Challenge.  Ty lays out why the Pepsi Challenge was successful and why ultimately, it was deceptive to the Coca-Cola management.

All of this talk about soft drinks leads the crew to remember magical moments when an ice cold Dr. Pepper or Coke was the best thing in the world.  Then the conversation turns to each member’s favorite candy back in the olden times.  Gustav brings up some long gone candies like the Marathon Bar or Reggie Bar while Ty and Heavy just stare blankly at him.

Turning from nostalgia to their mission statement to help their listeners, the guys put on their Dear Abby wigs and answer an email from Pretty Little Nurse  on how to catch a guy that she has been on a couple of dates with.  After delivering some remarkably sound advice, Gustav tells how Mrs. Gustav put him through a long interview process before she finally gave into his questionable charms.

Ointments, Copays, and a Snakebite

This week’s episode begins with Gustav recounting the story of the snakebite his seven year old daughter received on Memorial Day weekend.  She’s fine now, but it was a scary weekend followed by a few days at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.

The Big Toe Two Days After the Copperhead Snakebite

With all the medical talk, Heavy asks the guys to think about how fathers approach health care versus the way that mothers might.  As you can imagine, Heavy has some very specific ideas about the subject.  Along the way, Gustav gives tips for how to procure IV saline solution without a prescription for your emergency preparedness needs.  Heavy provides his own questionable tips and then shares his run in with Lyme Disease back in his scouting days.

The Juvenile Copperhead that Bit Gustav’s Daughter

An email from the Fake Bailey Jay spurs Gustav to talk about how her appearance and sweetness causes people to want to share all sorts of stories with her even though she is an introvert who doesn’t want strangers talking to her.  Fake Bailey Jay and Gustav ran the Tough Mudder in Austin and had no shortage of new friends.

The guys also talk about Heavy’s irrational dislike of anything to do with clowns, Tough Mudder, sunburns, and sunscreen.  And no episode would be complete without a walk down memory lane.  The guys babble about Buck Rogers and Silver Spoon, which both featured the super hot Erin GreyErin Gray in Buck Rogers
